Summer Internship & Fellowship Opportunities
Attention students! Spend your summer working alongside brilliant minds in engineering at some of the nation’s most prestigious companies and institutions, including Caltech and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
Aerospace Mentorship Program
Do you dream of launching to space? Through the Caltech Aerospace Mentorship Program, students will experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity as part of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech (GALCIT). Learn more and apply on Base 11 Digital.
Base 11 Fellow Nathan Sam shares his experience at the Caltech Summer Fellowship here. To read from a Caltech Fellow directly, check out this blog created by Base 11 student Elisa Shebaro.

- Informal talks and research group meetings with GALCIT students and faculty
- Weekly seminars by Caltech Faculty
- A professional development series sponsored by the Student-Faculty Program on developing a research career, graduate school admissions, and other topics of interest to future researchers
- Various social and cultural activities
- Special field trips
National Air and Space Museum Center for Earth and Planetary Studies Internship
Do you dream of exploring new frontiers in space? Through the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum’s Center for Earth and Planetary Studies Internship, students will help map Runoff Production on Early Mars.

The selected intern will map valley networks carved by running water during early
history of Mars and investigate why these valleys preferentially formed in some
locations rather than others. For example, surface characteristics such as slope,
contributing area, roughness, and topographic contour curvature may have
encouraged water to collect and floe downslope locally. The project involves mapping
with ArcGIS software on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Context Camera image mosaics,
as well as collection of measurements from image and topographic datasets. The
internship will be virtual.
Eligibility Criteria
- Actively enrolled in community college
- Studying geology, geography, physics, astronomy, computer science,
Earth/environmental science. - Strong computer and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge in computer programming
- Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
- Students must demonstrate a financial need
- Must complete a pre-employment background investigation
Additional Details
- Participants will receive a $5,500 stipend for the 10-week program.
- Students will use and improve skills working with ArcGIS software by digitizing and tracking feature locations, transitions, characteristics and morphologies
*NOT OPEN* Blue Origin Summer Internship Opportunity
* This opportunity is geared toward engineering students at a four-year university and who are participating in the Base 11 Space Challenge. *
Do you have a passion for human spaceflight systems? At Blue Origin, interns work directly under the mentorship of staff engineers to design, develop and construct human spaceflight systems. Each intern works on a real-world project in fields of mechanical design, fluids, aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, flight controls, electronics, avionics, enterprise software, flight software, human safety, structures, or systems engineering. Interns gain real-life experience that allows them to apply classroom learning to real aerospace challenges.

*NOT OPEN* Autonomous Systems Engineering Academy Program
Do you want to learn how to design, build, and fly a drone? Through this program, students learn the fundamentals of aerospace design, computer-aided design, 3D printing, basic electronics, and fabrication techniques. By working in teams under the guidance of graduate and undergraduate engineering and computer science students at the University of California, Irvine, students also gain experience with business plans, rapid-prototyping, and collaborative problem solving.
