Many toy retailers and parenting bloggers have added a STEM category to their holiday gift guides, reminding parents and gift-givers of the importance of fostering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills among America’s youth.
This decision may be chalked up to good marketing, but it’s backed by research from numerous studies suggesting that STEM-related toys can increase a child’s interest in STEM education especially in the early years of grade school. TOYS “R” US, Amazon, and Walmart, are just a few of the retailers taking part in the STEM initiative by selling toys such as stethoscopes, hammers, litmus paper, magnets, and pantographs that can help aid interest in STEM.
Some retailers have even tailored certain toys to be more appealing specifically to girls. Research has also found that STEM toys for boys are purchased at double the rate than STEM toys purchased for girls. However, the INSPIRE Research Institute believes that girls’ interest in STEM education can increase if STEM-related toys are introduced to them in school as well as at home.
Even though your holiday shopping for this year might be complete, it’s not too late to foster your child’s love for learning STEM. Parents can provide their children with common items found around the house such as remotes, old cell phones, or build-it-yourself items that the child can take apart and put back together again.
